Amy Carter
Amy Carter is the Community Services Lead for Montessori Canada, where she brings a deep passion and commitment to supporting Montessori educators, schools, and families. Amy’s journey in Montessori education began as a child in a Montessori environment and has evolved over more than 20 years of dedicated work as a Casa Guide. With her Primary Diploma from the AMI Training Center of BC, she has also held leadership roles, including Vice Principal, and recently earned her AMI Practitioner’s Certificate for working with elders living with dementia.
Amy was initially drawn to Montessori education during her time working in a daycare setting in Vancouver after university. Feeling uninspired by conventional education methods, she was encouraged by her sister to explore Montessori teaching. Upon observing a Montessori Casa classroom, Amy was struck by the children’s independence and the purposeful, individualized learning happening in the space. She immediately felt a calling to Montessori and, after reading Maria Montessori’s The Secret of Childhood, applied for the AMI Primary course the very next day. The Montessori principle of “Following the Child” resonates deeply with Amy, as she believes it is crucial to allow children to explore, grow, and learn at their own pace.
Throughout her career, one of Amy’s most cherished memories was when a student dressed up as her for Halloween, a touching reminder of the positive influence she has had on her students. Amy is driven by a strong desire to promote high-quality Montessori education and support educators in their professional journeys. Amy’s favourite Montessori activity is Flower Arranging, as it brings immense joy to her to witness children’s delight as they place fresh flowers in a vase. Reflecting her belief in constant growth and change, her favourite quote is: “The only constant in education is change, and that change is you” by Gavin McCormack. Amy is always available to lend a helping hand and eager to support others.
